Take Care of Your Eyewear
A premium frame can last a decade with proper care — or be ruined in a week with bad habits. Here's the right way to clean, store, and handle your glasses and Softlens.
How to Clean Your Glasses
- Rinse under lukewarm running water to remove dust and debris. Cold water is also fine, but avoid hot water, as it may damage certain lens coatings.
- Add one drop of mild dish soap or hand soap to the lenses and gently clean them with your fingertips. Avoid soaps containing lotion, citrus oils, scrubbing or abrasive particles, or softeners, as these may leave a residue. Be sure to clean the nose pads and earpieces as well.
- Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear and no soap remains.
- Shake off excess water and dry with a clean microfiber cloth, the one that came with your purchase. Pat, don't rub.
Frequency: daily if you can, weekly minimum. Oil and dust build up faster than you think.
Storage
Whenever you take off your glasses, gently fold the temples and place them in the protective case provided with your purchase. Avoid placing them lens-down on any surface or hanging them on your shirt collar, as this can scratch the lenses or bend the temples.
For storage longer than a day or two, fold the left temple first, then the right (this is what hinges are designed for). Keep the case away from heat — never leave it on a car dashboard.
In our climate this matters more than most people think. Never leave your glasses in a parked car or in direct sunlight — interior heat builds fast and can warp frames and damage coatings. At the beach, keep them away from saltwater and sea spray; salt can degrade lens coatings, especially on sunglasses.
What to Avoid
- Your shirt or sleeve. Cotton fibers and tiny grit can cause fine scratches on the lens coating over time.
- Paper towels and tissues. Wood fibers are abrasive and may cause fine scratches over time.
- Window cleaner or ammonia. Strips anti-reflective coatings within months.
- Saliva. Common, ineffective, and slightly antagonistic to coatings.
- Sleeping in your glasses. It can bend the frame, scratch the lenses, or damage the hinges. Put your glasses safely in their case.
Softlens Hygiene
Softlens hygiene is non-negotiable. Bacterial keratitis — the eye infection that comes from poor lens habits — can permanently scar your cornea.
- Always wash your hands with soap and dry them with a lint-free towel before handling lenses.
- Never use tap water on lenses or in the lens case. Tap water contains Acanthamoeba — a parasite that can cause permanent blindness.
- Replace the storage solution with fresh solution every time you put your lenses in the case. Never "top up" the old solution.
- Replace the case itself every 3 months. Biofilm builds up no matter how well you rinse.
- Never sleep while wearing Softlens. Overnight wear starves the cornea of oxygen and sharply raises the risk of infection.
- Don't share lenses, even for "fashion" color use. Eye infections transfer this way.
For cleaning and storage, we recommend a quality multi-purpose solution such as Opti-Free PureMoist or Bausch + Lomb Renu. These are guidance only and are not available to order online — ask our staff in any Optik Seis store.
Material-Specific Tips
Avoid extreme heat. Dashboard heat over hours can permanently warp acetate. Wipe with microfiber, never use harsh solvents.
More forgiving, but the hinges may loosen over time. Visit any Optik Seis store for free hinge tightening.
Drill-mount lenses are delicate around the screw points. Always grip the bridge or temples, never the lens edges, when handling your glasses.
